Matteo Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had allowed 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in a continuous dispute with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him admitted that the management had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in their other first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to determine if progress is being made or imploding.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Return

A single player kept smiling amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this year. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, during the summer break, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there temporarily. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He joined in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old alumnus of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in 2022-23, the vast majority of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed following that term, subsequently claimed Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Uncovering His True Position

Maybe Sarri was persistently working to determine the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
